What is Yoga?

Yoga (योग) is a group of physical, mental and spiritual disciplines which originated in Bharat (original name for ancient India). Yoga is one of the six Astika (orthodox) schools of Bharat.  The term “Yoga” in the Western world often denotes a modern form of physical postures (Asana) or as exercise. The practice of yoga has been thought and practiced since time immemorial. Yoga is mentioned in the RigVeda, India’s (and World’s) oldest scriptures and also referenced in the Upanishads and Bhagavat Gita, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, Hatha Yoga Pradipika, among many others.

Yoga

Yoga is union with the God and harmony with Its Creation. Yoga gives us an opportunity to reflect on how we live, what we want in life and how we can improve ourselves and our lifestyles now and for the future. It is a chance to adopt a spiritual yogic lifestyle and create a good structure for the day. This can be achieved by living our normal daily routines with a focus on:

  • acquiring good physical health to boost the immune system;
  • good mental and emotional balance to maintain clarity, happiness, harmony, contentment, positivity and creativity;
  • developing a spiritual culture in life.

In order to achieve the above one needs to develop the idea of sanyamSanyam literally means restraint, but it also indicates a process by which all dimensions of the human personality and lifestyle are balanced and beautified. A yogic lifestyle is based on sanyam, along with a continued effort to improve and do better.

It will be a time of positive change for all of us if we apply ourselves. If we can acknowledge and accept our faults, and see our positive and supportive contributions to the problems we face. We as individuals can change our lifestyles to live more simply, more harmoniously with ourselves, our family and friends and our home – Planet Earth.
