Shirodhara is an Ayurvedic treatment where a steady stream of warm oil is continuously poured onto the forehead to promote relaxation and reduce stress. The process involves a practitioner pouring warm, often medicated, oil over the “third eye” (point between eyebrows and forehead) area which calms the nervous system and induce a deep state of mental and physical relaxation.
What to expect during the treatment
- Preparation: Arrive well-rested and hydrated, wearing comfortable clothing. The practitioner will determine the appropriate oil or liquid based on your specific Ayurvedic constitution (dosha).
- The treatment: You will lie comfortably on a massage table. The practitioner will massage the head and scalp and then begin by gently pouring a thin, steady stream of warm liquid from a pot or vessel positioned over your forehead. This is typically done for 30 to 40 minutes.
- Post-treatment: After the oil flow stops, the treatment often concludes with a gentle head and scalp massage and dry the excess oil from scalp and hair. It is usually recommended not to shower immediately and to leave the oil in your hair for a period (2 to 24 hours is often suggested) to maximize the benefits.
